How to read the family score report

Scale score and level

The 3-digit scale score decides the performance level. Scale scores can be compared across years on the same test, but not across subjects.

Reporting categories

Each test has three to five reporting categories, the main areas tested. In grade 3 math, for example, they are Multiplication and Division, Numbers and Operations, Fractions, Geometry, and Modeling and Reasoning.

Below, near or above proficient

Each reporting category gets one of three indicators. They show which areas were weaker or stronger, and the weaker ones are where practice helps most.

Reading subscore (grade 3)

The grade 3 English language arts report includes a reading subscore. A reading subscore of 50 or higher meets the Third Grade Reading Guarantee even if the overall score is below 700.

School, district and state

Your child's report may show how the score compares with students who took the same test in the same school, district and state.

Percentile rank

Where it appears, the percentile rank shows your child's standing relative to other students in the same grade or group.

How Ohio public school students scored in spring 2026

Grade 3 reading: the promotion score

Under Ohio's Third Grade Reading Guarantee, a third grader needs the promotion score of 700 on the grade 3 English language arts test to move to grade 4, or 50 or higher on the reading subscore. Third graders who have not yet scored 700 take the test in the fall and again in the spring, and a summer test gives one more chance. A student who scores 700 in the fall does not have to retake it in the spring.

A student can also qualify on an approved alternative reading test if the district offers one. The 2026-2027 promotion scores are 524 on i-Ready, 196 on NWEA MAP Growth, 974 on the Star Reading Third Grade Proficiency Assessment, 179 on the Iowa Assessments reading test, and a 627 scale score on TerraNova Complete Battery or TerraNova NEXT.

A student who reaches none of these must be retained unless an exemption applies. Exemptions include English learners with fewer than three full school years in U.S. schools and fewer than three years of English as a second language instruction, an IEP that exempts the child, and a parent request. With the parent request exemption, the parent consults the reading teacher and principal and has the final say. A child promoted that way gets a reading improvement plan in grade 4 and 90 minutes of daily reading instruction with intensive intervention until reading on grade level.

High school: the 684 competency score

To graduate, Ohio students must earn a competency score of 684 on both the English Language Arts II and Algebra I end-of-course tests (684 also counts on Integrated Math I), or show competency another way. 684 is below Proficient. ODEW set it after researching the math and English skills needed in jobs that require only a high school diploma.

A student who misses 684 must be offered remediation and must retake the test at least once. After that, other ways to show competency include College Credit Plus, career-focused activities, ACT or SAT scores, and military enlistment. A competency score earned on these tests in middle school counts toward graduation.

Questions parents ask

What is a passing score on the Ohio State Test?

Ohio reports five performance levels rather than pass or fail. Proficient, which starts at a scale score of 700 on every test, is the state's proficient mark. Two scores carry extra weight: 700 is also the promotion score on the grade 3 English language arts test, and 684 is the graduation competency score on the English Language Arts II and Algebra I (or Integrated Math I) end-of-course tests.

Is 700 a good score on the Ohio State Test?

700 is the lowest Proficient score on every Ohio State Test. ODEW's glossary describes Proficient as a general ability to show the knowledge and skills in Ohio's Learning Standards. Accomplished starts at 725, and Advanced starts between 735 and 766 depending on the test.

What do Limited, Basic, Proficient, Accomplished and Advanced mean?

They are Ohio's five performance levels. The test portal's glossary describes them as an emerging (Limited), developing (Basic), general (Proficient), consistent (Accomplished) and exceeding (Advanced) ability to show the knowledge and skills in Ohio's Learning Standards.

What is the highest score on the Ohio State Test?

It depends on the test. In spring 2026 the highest possible scale score ranged from 774 (grade 8 math and American Government) to 868 (grade 8 science), and the lowest possible from 545 (grade 3 English language arts) to 642 (American Government). Advanced starts between 735 and 766.

What score does a third grader need to move to fourth grade?

The promotion score on the grade 3 English language arts test is 700. A student who scores 50 or higher on the reading subscore is also eligible, even with an overall score below 700. Students can reach the promotion score in the fall, spring or summer test, or on an approved alternative reading test if the district offers one. Exemptions include certain English learners, students whose IEP exempts them, and a parent request.

Can a parent stop a third grader from being held back in Ohio?

Yes. Under the parent request exemption, a parent or caregiver can ask for promotion to grade 4 regardless of the grade 3 ELA score. The parent must consult the child's reading teacher and principal, and if they disagree, the parent has the final say. A child promoted this way must have a reading improvement plan in grade 4 and 90 minutes of daily reading instruction with intensive intervention until reading on grade level.

What is the 684 competency score?

To graduate, Ohio students must earn a competency score of 684 on the English Language Arts II and Algebra I end-of-course tests (684 also counts on Integrated Math I), or meet competency another way. A student who misses it must be offered remediation and must retake the test at least once before using the other options. A competency score earned in middle school counts.

Are Ohio State Test score ranges the same every year?

The spring 2025 and spring 2026 statistical summaries print the same cut points for every test. Scale scores are comparable from year to year on the same test, but not across subjects or grades, so compare levels, not raw numbers, when your child moves up a grade.

What do "below proficient", "near proficient" and "above proficient" mean on the report?

Each test reports three to five reporting categories, such as Reading Literary Text or Fractions. For each one, the report shows an indicator of below, near or above proficient. They show your child's stronger and weaker areas, which is a good place to start with the teacher.

When do Ohio State Test scores come out?

Ohio law (ORC 3313.6029) requires schools to give families spring results by June 30. For spring 2027 that is June 30, 2027. Schools may mail them, email them or post them on a secure portal, and printed family reports for spring testing reach districts by July 21, 2027.

My child scored Limited or Basic. What should we do next?

Start with the reporting category indicators: they show which parts of the test were below proficient. Talk to the teacher about those areas first. iMasterly's Ohio State Tests practice explains every answer, so your child can work on the exact skills behind the score.
