Grade 3 is the year Ohio's State Tests begin, and it's an encouraging start in math: 63% of Ohio third graders scored Proficient or above in spring 2026, second only to grade 4 among the grade 3-8 math tests. The content sits squarely on the elementary essentials: multiplication and division within 100, and the first formal work with fractions.
ODEW reports grade 3 math in five strands: Multiplication & Division, Fractions, Numbers & Operations, Geometry, and Modeling & Reasoning. Multiplication and division fluency is the make-or-break skill of the year.
In spring 2026, 63% of Ohio third graders reached Proficient or above (scale 700+). That still means more than a third of third graders were below Proficient.
Ohio's State Tests are fixed-form tests given online through Cambium's Ohio portal, with paper as an accommodation (ODEW). Grade 3 math has two parts of up to 75 minutes each, and NO calculator is allowed unless a student qualifies for one as an accommodation.
