About the Ohio's State Test Grade 5 Math Test
Grade 5 is where Ohio math gets noticeably harder. Ohio students post strong math results in the early grades — 63% proficient in grade 3 and 68% in grade 4 in spring 2026 — but grade 5 drops to 60%. The reason is the content: grade 5 is the year decimals join fractions as the central, and trickiest, skills of elementary math.
The test measures Ohio's Learning Standards, and ODEW reports grade 5 math in four strands: Decimals, Fractions, Geometry, and Modeling & Reasoning. The heart of grade 5 is operations with decimals (to hundredths) and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions, plus volume and the coordinate plane.
In spring 2026, 60% of Ohio fifth graders scored Proficient or above (Proficient, Accomplished, or Advanced, at a scale score of 700+). That's a majority, but it also means four in ten fifth graders were below Proficient.
Ohio's State Tests are fixed-form tests given online through Cambium's Ohio portal, with paper as an accommodation (ODEW). Grade 5 math has two parts of up to 75 minutes each, and NO calculator is allowed on either part — ODEW keeps calculators out of grades 3-5 math unless a student qualifies for one as an accommodation.
Proficient + Accomplished + Advanced (scale 700+). Basic (Level 2) and Limited (Level 1) are below Proficient. Down from 68% in grade 4 (spring 2026). In spring 2025 the grade 5 figure was 57%.
