What Is the Ohio State Tests Test in Ohio?
The Ohio State Tests (OST) are Ohio's statewide standardized assessments for students in grades 3-8. The OST measures mastery of Ohio's Learning Standards — state-specific standards that share some DNA with Common Core but are maintained independently by the Ohio Department of Education. Unlike many states that have moved to adaptive testing, Ohio uses a fixed-form assessment where every student in the same grade sees the same questions. Ohio uses five performance levels with a unique 'Accomplished' tier between Proficient and Advanced.
When Is the Ohio State Tests Test in 2026-2027?
Spring 2027 windows from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce: English language arts March 29 - April 30, 2027; math, science, and social studies April 5 - May 14, 2027. Each district picks 15 consecutive school days (including make-ups) inside each window, so math testing can run about two weeks later than ELA. Grade 3 ELA is also given in the fall (October 19 - November 6, 2026), with a summer retest June 21 - July 2, 2027. The department notes that all dates are subject to change.

Ohio uses the following performance levels. 'Proficient' (scale score 700+) is the target. Ohio's unique 'Accomplished' tier sits between Proficient and Advanced — aim for Accomplished or higher.

Ohio State Tests Test Format: What to Expect
Fixed-Form, Not Adaptive
Every student in the same grade gets the exact same questions. Performance is measured by how many questions are answered correctly, not by difficulty adjustment. This is one of the few remaining non-adaptive state tests.
Computer-Based
The Ohio State Tests are administered online. Question types include multiple choice, multi-select, typed answers (math equations), extended written response (English), and technology-enhanced items such as hot text, drag-and-drop, grids and table matching.
Separate ELA and Math Windows
ELA and Math have different testing windows. In spring 2027 the ELA window ends April 30 and the math and science window ends May 14, two weeks later. Schools schedule within these windows.
Science in Grades 5 and 8 Only
Science is tested only in grades 5 and 8. These are high-priority years for science preparation.

What Ohio Parents Should Know About the Ohio State Tests
'Proficient' (Level 3, score 700+) is the target, but aim for 'Accomplished' or 'Advanced' to demonstrate strong mastery. Ohio's extra tier gives you more granular information about where your child stands.
Unlike adaptive tests where every student gets different questions, the OST gives everyone the same test. This means your child's results are directly comparable to every other student in their grade across Ohio.
Science is only tested in grades 5 and 8. If your child is approaching these grades, start science preparation early — it's the only shot they get.
The math testing window runs later than ELA. Your child may finish ELA testing in April but still have math testing into mid-May (the 2027 window closes May 14). Keep study momentum going through the full window.
Ohio does not test Social Studies in K-8 (unlike Georgia and Louisiana). Focus preparation on ELA, Math, and Science (grades 5 and 8).
