Proficiency was 56% in spring 2026, down from 71% in grade 5 — the lowest grade 3-8 ELA result — as the reading gets more analytical: identifying theme and central idea, analyzing how an author builds an argument, and citing specific text evidence.
ODEW reports the English test in three strands — Reading Informational Text, Reading Literary Text, and Writing. Starting at grade 6, the ELA test has two writing prompts, a maximum raw score of 62 points in 2026, and two sessions of 1 hour 45 minutes each.
Ohio's State Tests are fixed-form tests given online through Cambium's Ohio portal, with paper as an accommodation (ODEW).
