A lot of new, abstract content lands at once — ratios and rates, dividing fractions, negative numbers and the full number line, and the first real algebraic expressions and equations.
The test measures Ohio's Learning Standards, with grade-6 reporting categories of Ratios & Proportions, The Number System, Expressions & Equations, Geometry & Statistics, and Modeling & Reasoning. Ratios and rates are the signature new skill of grade 6, and early algebra becomes central.
In 2025, 52% of Ohio sixth graders reached Proficient or above (scale 700+ — "on grade level"). A dip here is common as the content gets more abstract.
Ohio's State Tests are online, two-part tests on Cambium (paper as an accommodation). Grade 6 is the first year a calculator appears: NO calculator on Part 1, calculator allowed on Part 2. So part of the test still rewards by-hand fluency.
