About the Ohio's State Test Grade 6 Math Test
Sixth grade is the first middle-grades math year in Ohio, and spring 2026 results show the jump: 57% proficient, down from 60% in grade 5. A lot of new, abstract content lands at once — ratios and rates, dividing fractions, negative numbers and the full number line, and the first real algebraic expressions and equations.
ODEW reports grade 6 math in five strands: Ratios & Proportions, The Number System, Expressions & Equations, Geometry & Statistics, and Modeling & Reasoning.
Ohio's State Tests are fixed-form tests given online through Cambium's Ohio portal, with paper as an accommodation (ODEW). Grade 6 math has two sections of up to 90 minutes each. It is the first year a calculator appears: Section 1 is non-calculator and Section 2 allows a calculator (ODEW recommends a scientific calculator for grades 6-8, and one is built into the online test).
Proficient + Accomplished + Advanced (scale 700+). Basic (Level 2) and Limited (Level 1) are below Proficient. Down from 60% in grade 5 (2026). In spring 2025 the grade 6 figure was 52%.
