About the Ohio's State Test Grade 5 Science Test

Science shows up on Ohio's State Tests at only two grades — grade 5 and grade 8 — so fifth-grade science is one of just two chances the state measures your child's science learning before high school. That makes it easy to overlook, since there's no science OST in grades 3, 4, 6, or 7.

The test measures Ohio's Learning Standards in Science across three reporting categories: Earth & Space Science, Life Science, and Physical Science. Grade-5 content spans the water cycle and weather, ecosystems and the flow of energy through living things, and light, sound, and the properties of matter.

In 2025, 64% of Ohio fifth graders scored Proficient or above (scale 700+ — "on grade level") in science — a solid majority, close to grade-8 science (63%).

Ohio's State Tests are online, two-part tests on Cambium (paper as an accommodation). Grade-5 science is concept-based; no calculator is needed.

64%% Proficient or above (Grade 5 Science, Spring 2025)

Proficient + Accomplished + Advanced (scale 700+ = on grade level). Science is tested at only grades 5 and 8 in Ohio. Basic and Limited are below grade level.
