New 2026-27 Cut Scores
Last reviewed against Virginia Department of Education sources
Quick answer
What is a passing SOL score in 2026-27?
For 2026-27 grades 3-8 reading and math SOL tests, the lowest passing score is 408 to 426 depending on grade and subject, and Pass/Proficient starts between 430 and 451. In grade 3 reading, for example, 418 passes and 444 is Proficient. For tests taken in 2025-26, 400 was still passing. The scale runs from 0 to 600.

What does my child's score mean?
Pick the year your child tested. Spring 2026 scores were judged against the old 400 passing score. For 2026-27 tests, SOL Grade 3 Reading counts as passing from 418 and reaches Pass/Proficient at 444.

What changed, in order
2023 and 2024
The Board of Education approved more rigorous math (2023) and English (2024) Standards of Learning.
Spring 2025
New reading and math SOL tests, fully aligned to the new standards, were given for the first time.
September 2025
The Board unanimously approved new, higher reading and math cut scores, aligned with national benchmarks.
2025-26: preparation year
The cut scores did not change. 400 stayed the passing score for spring 2026 tests.
2026-27 to 2028-29: phase-in
New Pass/Proficient cut scores apply. A temporary Pass/Approaching level counts as passing, and its floor rises each year.
2029-30
Pass/Approaching ends. The full new cut scores apply, so Pass/Proficient becomes the passing score.

High school: end-of-course tests and verified credits
Math end-of-course tests use the new cut scores from 2026-27. On Algebra I, Pass/Proficient is 453-517 and Pass/Advanced 518-600. The temporary Pass/Approaching range is 413-452 in 2026-27, and its floor rises to 426 in 2027-28 and 439 in 2028-29.
On the end-of-course reading test, students entering grade 9 in fall 2026 use the new cut scores: Pass/Approaching is 420-478 in 2026-27 and Pass/Proficient starts at 479. Students in grades 10 and 11 keep the 400 passing score.
A student who retakes a test must meet the passing score in effect at the original attempt, and students who already passed an end-of-course test or earned a verified credit do not have to retake it.

How Virginia students did in 2025-26
These pass rates use the old 400 passing score. Statewide, 72% of students passed grades 3-8 reading and 69% passed grades 3-8 math, each up 0.4 percentage points from 2024-25.

Grade 7 and 8 math dipped slightly while more middle schoolers took high school math end-of-course tests instead; 95% of them passed. End-of-course pass rates: math 85%, reading 86%, science 75%.

The new parent score report
VDOE planned new parent reports starting with spring 2026 tests. They show your child's score and level under both the current and the revised cut scores, describe each level in plain language, and point out strengths and areas for growth. If a spring 2026 report shows two levels, that is why: the first is what counted that year, the second previews the new bar.

Questions parents ask
What is a passing score on the Virginia SOL in 2026?
For tests taken in the 2025-26 school year (spring 2026), the passing score was still 400 on the 0-600 scale, and 500 was Pass/Advanced. The Board of Education made 2025-26 a preparation year. The new, higher reading and math cut scores start with the 2026-27 school year.
Is 400 still passing on the SOL in 2026-27?
Not on grades 3-8 reading and math tests. In 2026-27 the lowest passing score (the bottom of the temporary Pass/Approaching level) is 408 to 426 depending on grade and subject, and Pass/Proficient starts between 430 and 451. The new cut scores apply only to reading and math tests.
What does Pass/Approaching mean?
It is a temporary level for the four-year phase-in. A Pass/Approaching score counts as passing, but it is below the new Pass/Proficient bar for the grade. Its lower edge rises each year (2026-27, 2027-28, 2028-29), and the level is removed after 2028-29, when the full new cut scores apply.
Why did Virginia change the SOL cut scores?
Virginia adopted more rigorous math standards in 2023 and English standards in 2024, and new SOL tests aligned to them were given from spring 2025. VDOE says the old cut scores reflected the 2016 math and 2017 English standards. The Board of Education unanimously approved new cut scores in September 2025, aligned with national benchmarks.
Will my child's 2026-27 SOL score look worse than last year?
It may, even if your child learned just as much. The 2026-27 tests are judged against higher cut scores, so a score that passed at 400 last year can fall below the new passing floor. Compare the level and the score, not just pass or fail, and talk with the teacher.
Does a retake use the old or the new passing score?
The passing score in effect at the time of the original test attempt. VDOE's example: a student who scores 380 on the Algebra I end-of-course test in 2025-26 can retake it to earn the 400 passing score that applied then.
What happens to high school end-of-course tests?
Math end-of-course tests (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II) use the new cut scores from 2026-27. On Algebra I in 2026-27, Pass/Approaching is 413-452, Pass/Proficient starts at 453 and Pass/Advanced at 518. For the end-of-course reading test, students entering grade 9 in fall 2026 use the new cut scores (Pass/Approaching 420-478 in 2026-27, Pass/Proficient from 479), while students in grades 10 and 11 keep the 400 passing score. Verified credits already earned are protected.
How did Virginia students do on the SOL in 2026?
In 2025-26, 72% of students passed grades 3-8 reading SOL tests and 69% passed grades 3-8 math, each up 0.4 percentage points from 2024-25. Grade 7 and 8 math pass rates dipped slightly, while more middle schoolers took high school math end-of-course tests instead.
What will the new parent score report show?
VDOE planned new parent reports from spring 2026 that show your child's score and performance under both the current and the revised cut scores, describe each level in plain language, and highlight strengths and areas for growth.
