PSSA Scores Explained:
Cut Scores & Levels

On the PSSA, a score at Proficient or Advanced meets Pennsylvania's standard, and in ELA and math Proficient starts at 1000 in every grade from 3 to 8. Here is the score for each level by grade, what the report shows, and why 2026 results are taking longer than usual.

Quick answer

What is a passing score on the PSSA?

The PSSA has no pass or fail, but Pennsylvania counts Proficient and Advanced as meeting the standard. In English Language Arts and math, Proficient starts at a scale score of 1000 in every grade from 3 to 8. Advanced starts between 1107 and 1143 in ELA and between 1105 and 1113 in math, depending on the grade. Basic starts between 845 and 923, and scores below that are Below Basic.

2026 results: why they are late

On hold
Official statewide 2026 PSSA and Keystone results, "pending further review" (DRC, PDE's testing contractor)

Spring 2026 was also the first year all PSSA testing moved online. PDE sends individual student scores only to schools, so your child's report comes from the school or district, not from the state. If you have not received it, ask the school. For context, the 2024-25 statewide proficiency rates were 41.7% in math and 49.9% in ELA; science scores were waived that year because of the new standards.

What does my child's score mean?

Type the scale score from your child's PSSA report (scores start at 600). For Grade 3 ELA, Proficient starts at 1000 and Advanced at 1143.

Each number is the lowest scale score for that level. A score below the Basic number is Below Basic (scores start at 600). The highlighted column is Proficient, Pennsylvania's standard.

The four performance levels

Advanced

At or above the Advanced score for the grade (1105 to 1143, depending on grade and subject). Counts toward proficiency.

Proficient

At or above 1000 in ELA or math, in every grade 3 to 8. This is Pennsylvania's bar: the state reports the share of students who are Proficient or Advanced.

Basic

Below 1000 but at or above the Basic score for the grade (845 to 923). Close, but not proficient.

Below Basic

Below the Basic score for the grade. Scores start at 600.

Reading the student report

Performance level and score

Each subject shows the level and the scale score, with an arrow showing where the score falls inside the level.

Reporting categories

Points earned in each reporting category of the test. The categories are different in each grade and are described on page 4 of the report.

Strength Profile

How your child did in each category, taking the difficulty of the questions into account. This is the best guide to what to practice next.

Score range (SEM)

The band your child would probably score in on a different version of the same test, plus the lowest and highest possible scores.

Each subject has its own scale, so do not compare a math score with an ELA score; compare levels instead.

Science: a new test and new cut scores

Pennsylvania moved science to new standards called STEELS. Science scores from spring 2025 were waived, and spring 2026 brought the first STEELS-aligned science PSSA, taken in grades 5 and 8. A new test needs new cut scores, so PDE is running a standard setting, and science results are expected no later than December 2026, later than the usual early November. The old science score ranges do not apply to the new test, so we will add the new ones here when PDE publishes them.

Getting ready for spring 2027

The 2027 PSSA runs ELA April 26-30, then math and science May 3-7, with an optional week for math, science and make-ups May 10-14. Start with the categories the Strength Profile shows as weakest. Our PSSA practice pages by grade:

Questions parents ask

What is a passing score on the PSSA?

The PSSA has no pass or fail, but Pennsylvania counts Proficient and Advanced as meeting the standard. In ELA and math, Proficient starts at a scale score of 1000 in every grade from 3 to 8. Advanced starts between 1107 and 1143 in ELA and between 1105 and 1113 in math, depending on the grade.

When will 2026 PSSA results come out?

PDE's testing contractor, DRC, says official statewide PSSA and Keystone results for 2026 are "on hold pending further review", with more information to come. PDE gave districts preliminary school data earlier, and individual student scores go to each school, so ask your child's school for the report. Science results come later than usual this year, no later than December 2026. Last year's statewide results were released on November 13, 2025.

Where do I find my child's PSSA score?

PDE provides individual student scores only to the student's school, not directly to families, so the report comes from your school or district. Some districts also post it in their own parent portal.

Is a PSSA score of 1000 good?

Yes: 1000 is exactly the Proficient score in ELA and math for every grade 3 to 8, so a 1000 means your child met Pennsylvania's standard. Advanced starts higher, around 1105 to 1143 depending on the grade and subject.

What happened to PSSA science?

Pennsylvania adopted new science standards (STEELS). Science scores for spring 2025 were waived, and spring 2026 brought the first STEELS-aligned science PSSA in grades 5 and 8. It needs new cut scores, set through a standard-setting process, which is why science results are expected later, no later than December 2026.

Can I compare ELA and math scores?

No. PDE's guide says each subject has its own scale, so a 1050 in math and a 1050 in ELA do not mean the same thing. Compare the performance levels instead.

What is the score range on my child's report?

The report shows a Standard Error of Measure band: the range your child would probably score in on a different version of the same test. It also shows the lowest and highest possible scores. PDE says the minimum stays the same each year, while the maximum can change with the test's difficulty.

What is PA Firefly?

Firefly is the free online benchmark test Pennsylvania offers schools during the year. PDE says it is aligned to Pennsylvania standards, so schools use it to check progress before the spring PSSA. It is not a replacement for the PSSA.

My child scored below Proficient on the PSSA. What should we do next?

Start with the reporting categories on the score report: they show which broad areas were weakest. Then find the exact skills inside them. A full practice test built like the PSSA, such as iMasterly's, scores your child in each reporting category and explains every question, so you can practice the skills that cost points. Your child's teacher can also tell you what extra support the school offers.
