STAAR writing, in Richardson and statewide

There is no separate writing test anymore. Writing is inside the Reading Language Arts test in every grade 3-8: a 10-point essay and 2-point short answers, about a quarter of the points. Our reading tests include both.

Algebra I in middle school

A Richardson middle schooler in Algebra I takes the Algebra I EOC the year they finish the course. In spring 2027 that is April 22, the same day as grades 6-8 math.

Questions Richardson parents ask

When is STAAR in Richardson ISD in 2027?

Richardson ISD's 2026-27 state assessment calendar gives one day per test. Reading Language Arts: Thursday, April 8 for grades 6-8 at middle schools and junior highs, Tuesday, April 13 for grades 3-6 at elementaries. Grade 8 social studies: April 15. Grade 5 and 8 science: April 20. Math: Thursday, April 22 for grades 6-8, Tuesday, April 27 for grades 3-6. Spring 2027 is the last STAAR for grades 3-8.

Why does my sixth grader test on a different day than other sixth graders?

It depends on the campus. Richardson ISD's calendar lists sixth grade twice: sixth graders at an elementary school take reading on April 13 and math on April 27 with grades 3-5, and sixth graders at a middle school or junior high take reading on April 8 and math on April 22 with grades 7-8. It is the same STAAR test either way.

How do I see my child's STAAR scores in Richardson ISD?

Richardson ISD's Assessment Center gives these steps on a computer: log in to the Focus Parent Portal, click your child's name, click Child Info, then Assessment Rpt Cards. The Texas Test Scores section at the top has a link to the Texas Student Portal, in English or Spanish, which lists your child's state test history.

Does my middle schooler take the Algebra I EOC?

If they take Algebra I in middle school, yes. Richardson ISD says a student below high school who takes an EOC course takes that EOC the year they finish the course. In 2026-27 the Algebra I EOC is on December 2, April 22 and June 16.

Is there STAAR writing in Richardson schools?

Writing is part of the reading test now. Since the 2023 redesign there is no separate writing test; the Reading Language Arts test in every grade 3-8 includes a 10-point essay and 2-point short written answers, about a quarter of the points.

Do Richardson ISD students take the same STAAR as the rest of Texas?

Yes. STAAR is written and scored by the Texas Education Agency, so a Richardson fourth grader takes the same test as every Texas fourth grader. Richardson ISD only sets the day. Practice built on TEA's released tests is practice for the Richardson test.
