Plano STAAR Prep
Practice Tests

Plano ISD students take the same statewide STAAR as every Texas student, and spring 2027 is the last one for grades 3-8. Our practice tests copy TEA's 2026 released tests question by question, on screens that work like the real test, with every answer explained, so your child can practice at home.

STAAR writing, in Plano and statewide

There is no separate writing test anymore. Writing is inside the Reading Language Arts test in every grade 3-8: a 10-point essay and 2-point short answers, about a quarter of the points. Our reading tests include both, scored against a rubric modeled on TEA's.

Grade 3: the first STAAR

Third grade brings the first STAAR, in math and reading, taken online. Many third graders lose points to the screen, not the content: drag and drop, hot spots, typed answers. One full practice test shows where your child stands before spring.

When Plano students test

Spring, inside the state windows; the district picks the exact days. Spring 2027: reading April 5-16, science and social studies April 12-23, math April 19-30. Spring 2027 is the last STAAR for grades 3-8 before the Student Success Tool.

Finding your child's scores

Plano ISD Parent Portal, then Performance Management, then the STAAR Results link by your child's name. Or the Texas Assessment Family Portal with the Unique Access Code Plano ISD emails you. Four levels: Masters, Meets, Approaches and Did Not Meet; Approaches is passing, Meets is on grade level.

More than one score

Plano ISD tells parents to look past a single test: it lists MAP, mClass early literacy, CogAT, PSAT/SAT, AP and district assessments as other measures of progress. STAAR is the one the state uses for school A-F ratings.

Questions Plano parents ask

Do Plano ISD students take the same STAAR as the rest of Texas?

Yes. STAAR is a statewide test written and scored by the Texas Education Agency, so a Plano ISD fourth grader takes the same STAAR as every Texas fourth grader: reading and math in grades 3-8, science in grades 5 and 8, and social studies in grade 8. Practice built on TEA's released tests is practice for the Plano test.

When is STAAR in Plano ISD in 2027?

Inside TEA's spring 2027 windows: Reading Language Arts April 5-16, grade 5 and 8 science and grade 8 social studies April 12-23, and math April 19-30. Each district picks its exact days inside those windows; Plano ISD had not posted its 2026-27 testing calendar when we checked on October 16, 2026. Spring 2027 is the last STAAR for grades 3-8.

How do I see my child's STAAR scores in Plano ISD?

Plano ISD gives two ways. The district's preferred one: log in to the Plano ISD Parent Portal, scroll down to Performance Management, and click the link next to your child's name under "STAAR Results." Or go to the Texas Assessment Family Portal (texasassessment.gov) and enter your child's Unique Access Code, date of birth and legal first name. Plano ISD sends the access code to parents by secure SchoolMessenger email, and it stays the same for your child's whole school career.

Is STAAR the only test that matters in Plano?

No, and Plano ISD says so itself. On its "More Than A Score" page the district lists other measures parents can use to follow progress: MAP, the mClass early literacy assessments, CogAT, PSAT/SAT and AP exams, and district assessments. STAAR still counts for the state's A-F school ratings.

Is there STAAR writing in Plano schools?

Writing is part of the reading test now. Since the 2023 redesign there is no separate writing test; the Reading Language Arts test in every grade 3-8 includes a 10-point essay and 2-point short written answers, about a quarter of the points.

What replaces STAAR after 2027?

The Student Success Tool (SST): three shorter tests a year under House Bill 8, starting in the 2027-28 school year. It tests the same TEKS standards, so STAAR practice carries over.
