Katy STAAR Prep
Practice Tests
Katy ISD students take the same statewide STAAR as every Texas student, and spring 2027 is the last one for grades 3-8. Our practice tests copy TEA's 2026 released tests question by question, on screens that work like the real test, with every answer explained, so your child can practice at home.
STAAR practice tests for Katy students
STAAR writing, in Katy and statewide
There is no separate writing test anymore. Writing is inside the Reading Language Arts test in every grade 3-8: a 10-point essay and 2-point short answers, about a quarter of the points. Our reading tests include both, scored against a rubric modeled on TEA's.
Grade 3: the first STAAR
Third grade brings the first STAAR, in math and reading, taken online. Many third graders lose points to the screen, not the content: drag and drop, hot spots, typed answers. One full practice test shows where your child stands before spring.
When Katy students test
Spring, inside the state windows; each Katy ISD campus posts its own days. Spring 2027: reading April 5-16, science and social studies April 12-23, math April 19-30. Spring 2027 is the last STAAR for grades 3-8 before the Student Success Tool.
Reading the score report
STAAR has four levels: Masters, Meets, Approaches and Did Not Meet Grade Level. Approaches is passing; Meets is on grade level, Texas's proficiency target. Scores are in the Texas Assessment Family Portal.
Questions Katy parents ask
Do Katy ISD students take the same STAAR as the rest of Texas?
Yes. STAAR is a statewide test written and scored by the Texas Education Agency, so a Katy ISD third grader takes the same STAAR as every Texas third grader. Practice built on TEA's released tests is practice for the Katy test.
When does my child take STAAR in Katy ISD?
In the spring, inside the state testing windows. Each Katy ISD campus posts its own STAAR dates on its testing page, and the district notes dates can change at the discretion of TEA and Katy ISD. TEA's spring 2027 windows: Reading Language Arts April 5-16, grade 5 and 8 science and grade 8 social studies April 12-23, math April 19-30. Spring 2027 is the last STAAR for grades 3-8.
Is there STAAR writing in Katy schools?
Writing is part of the reading test now. Since the 2023 redesign there is no separate writing test; the Reading Language Arts test in every grade 3-8 includes a 10-point essay and 2-point short written answers, about a quarter of the points.
My child is in 3rd grade. How should we prepare for their first STAAR?
Grade 3 is the first STAAR year: math and reading, both online. The biggest surprise for most third graders is the screen itself: drag and drop, hot spots and typed answers. Start with one full practice test to see where they stand, then practice the question types that cost points.
Where do I find my child's STAAR scores?
In the Texas Assessment Family Portal, run by TEA; Katy ISD sends families there for all testing results. Results for grades 3-8 came out on June 16, 2026. Approaches Grade Level is passing; Meets Grade Level is on grade level, Texas's proficiency target.
What replaces STAAR after 2027?
The Student Success Tool (SST): three shorter tests a year under House Bill 8, starting in the 2027-28 school year. It tests the same TEKS standards, so STAAR practice carries over.
