Sixth grade is a genuine turning point in Georgia math — and the scores show it. At 37% Proficient or above in 2025, grade 6 is one of the lowest-performing math grades in the state. This is the first middle-grades year, and a lot of new, abstract content lands at once: ratios and rates, dividing fractions, negative numbers and the full number line, and the first real algebraic expressions and equations.
The math test is built on Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards. Grade 6 is also the year the strand structure shifts: the Measurement & Data Reasoning strand that ran through grades 3-5 drops away, and grade 6 math is organized into three strands — Numerical Reasoning (NR), Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning (PAR), and Geometric & Spatial Reasoning (GSR). Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning grows in importance here as expressions and equations become central.
In 2025, 37% of Georgia sixth graders reached Proficient or Distinguished (Levels 3 and 4 — "on grade level"). Read the number plainly: nearly two-thirds of sixth graders were below grade level in math, so a dip in performance at this grade is common and expected, not a sign your child specifically is falling behind.

Master ratios and rates — the signature grade-6 skill. Ratios, unit rates, and proportional thinking are new at grade 6 and show up throughout the test. Real-world practice (recipes, prices per unit, speed) makes them concrete.
Don't panic at a score dip. Grade 6 is the lowest-scoring math grade statewide (37% in 2025). A drop from elementary performance is the norm as the content jumps in abstraction — it's a cue to support, not to conclude your child is failing.
Get comfortable with negative numbers and the full number line. Grade 6 introduces negatives and the four-quadrant coordinate plane. A shaky grasp here becomes a lasting algebra gap, so it's worth extra practice.
