About the Georgia Milestones Grade 6 Math Test
Sixth grade is a genuine turning point in Georgia math — and the scores show it. At 41% Proficient Learner or above in 2026, grade 6 was the lowest-scoring math grade in the state, even though that was an all-time high for the grade (up from 37% in 2025). This is the first middle-grades year, and a lot of new, abstract content lands at once: ratios and rates, negative numbers on the number line, and the first real algebraic expressions and equations.
The math test is built on Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards. The strand structure shifts at grade 6: GaDOE's July 2025 blueprint has three strands, with no Measurement & Data Reasoning strand — Numerical Reasoning (NR, about 29 of 58 points), Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning (PAR, about 22) and Geometric & Spatial Reasoning (GSR, about 7). Ratios, rates, percents and unit conversions sit in Numerical Reasoning; expressions, one-step equations and inequalities, and the coordinate plane sit in Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning.
