About the Georgia Milestones Grade 6 English Test
Sixth grade is the first middle-grades English year, and the reading demands shift from 'what happened' to 'what does it mean and how do you know.' Grade 6 is not a promotion-gate year, but it sets the tone for middle-school ELA: theme and central idea, how an author builds an argument, and citing specific evidence.
Since 2025-26, the test follows Georgia's new K-12 English Language Arts Standards. GaDOE's August 2025 blueprint splits the 60 points into two domains: Interpreting Texts (reading, listening and viewing — about 34 points) and Constructing Texts (writing, speaking and creating — about 26 points). The claims cover context, structure and style, techniques, research and analysis, grammar conventions and vocabulary. Under GaDOE's August 2025 blueprint, the grade 6 test has no Extended Writing Task (grades 3, 5 and 8 have one); writing is tested through one- and two-point Constructing Texts questions. Your child's Lexile measure and Reading Status come from the Interpreting Texts questions.

Under Georgia's new K-12 ELA Standards, GaDOE's August 2025 blueprint for grade 6 has two domains: Interpreting Texts (about 34 of 60 points) and Constructing Texts (about 26). There is no Extended Writing Task at this grade; writing is tested through shorter questions.

GaDOE describes Proficient Learners as showing full mastery of grade-level standards and Developing Learners as showing partial mastery, 'in progress toward full proficiency.' The state's headline number is the percent at Proficient Learner or above.
Why won't I get my child's 2026 ELA Milestones score right away?
2025-26 was the first year of ELA tests aligned to Georgia's new K-12 English Language Arts Standards. GaDOE says additional test development, including standard setting and State Board adoption of new achievement standards, must be finished before ELA scores can be calculated, and its timeline shows student reporting beginning in November 2026. Math, science and social studies results were released in August 2026.
