Grade 4 is a bright spot in Georgia's Milestones math picture: at 49% Proficient or above in 2025, it's typically the strongest-performing math grade in the state. That's encouraging — but read it honestly: it still means roughly half of Georgia fourth graders are below grade level in math. Drill multi-digit multiplication and long division. These are grade 4's biggest new skills and the most common place fourth graders lose points. Steady practice with the standard algorithms builds the fluency the test rewards.
Go deep on fractions — equivalence and comparison. Grade 4 expects your child to recognize equivalent fractions, compare fractions, and add/subtract with like denominators. This is the year fractions either click or become a lasting gap.
Use grade 4 to build confidence before the grade-5 gate. It's typically Georgia's strongest math grade and it's not a promotion year — a good time to solidify skills so grade 5 (a gate year) isn't the first time the pressure is real.
