Grade 8 is the second of Georgia's two promotion-gate grades (with grade 5): state law asks schools to weigh the End-of-Grade reading AND math scores as part of the promotion decision to grade 9. It's also the mathematical bridge to high school — the content is built around functions and linear relationships, the foundation of Algebra I. Note that some eighth graders take the Algebra I End-of-Course test instead of the grade-8 math EOG; this page is about the grade-8 EOG.
The math test is built on Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards, and grade 8 has its own distinctive strand: Functional & Graphical Reasoning (FGR) — functions, linear equations, and their graphs — replaces the Measurement & Data Reasoning of earlier grades, alongside Numerical Reasoning (NR), Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning (PAR), and Geometric & Spatial Reasoning (GSR). The signature grade-8 skills are understanding functions, graphing and interpreting linear relationships (slope and intercept), the Pythagorean theorem, and working with exponents and scientific notation.
In 2025, 47% of Georgia eighth graders reached Proficient or Distinguished (Levels 3 and 4 — "on grade level") in math — one of the stronger middle-grades results, though still under half. "Proficient" is the true on-grade-level bar.
Georgia Milestones is given online with paper as an accommodation. Since 2023-24, grade 8 math has no no-calculator section; the state provides a Desmos testing calculator and a formula sheet.

Master functions and linear graphs — they're the heart of grade 8 and Algebra I. Understanding what a function is, and reading slope and intercept off a graph, is the single most important grade-8 skill. It's also the foundation of everything in high school algebra.
Take the promotion gate seriously but not fearfully. Grade 8 math (with reading) is weighed for promotion to grade 9, but a low score triggers remediation and a June retest, and a committee can still promote. Use a weak score as a map of what to shore up before high school.
Lock in the Pythagorean theorem and exponent rules. These are concrete, high-frequency grade-8 topics that are very learnable with focused practice — reliable points if your child has them down.
Practice with the on-screen Desmos calculator, especially for graphing. Grade 8 leans on graphing linear functions; being fast and accurate with the state's Desmos tool is a genuine test advantage.
Yes — indirectly. Georgia law asks schools to consider the grade 8 End-of-Grade reading AND math scores as part of the promotion decision to grade 9. A below-grade-level score triggers remediation and a summer retest (June 23-25, 2026); it is not an automatic hold-back, and a placement committee of the principal, teacher, and parent can still promote the student.
