Seventh grade is the year proportional reasoning becomes the through-line of Georgia math, and a new strand — Probability Reasoning — joins the test. It's a demanding year: 40% of Georgia seventh graders reached Proficient or above in 2025, in line with the middle-grades pattern where roughly six in ten students sit below grade level.
The math test is built on Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards. Grade 7's strand mix is distinctive: Numerical Reasoning (NR), Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning (PAR), Geometric & Spatial Reasoning (GSR), and — new at this grade — Probability Reasoning (PR), which replaces the Measurement & Data Reasoning strand of the elementary grades. The core content is operations with rational numbers (including negatives), proportional relationships and percent problems, and solving multi-step equations and inequalities.
In 2025, 40% of Georgia seventh graders reached Proficient or Distinguished (Levels 3 and 4 — "on grade level"). As in grade 6, a below-grade-level result is common statewide at this grade, so it's a signal to target specific gaps rather than a verdict on ability.
Georgia Milestones is given online with paper as an accommodation. As with all middle grades since 2023-24, grade 7 math has no no-calculator section — the state provides a Desmos testing calculator and a formula sheet.
Levels 3+4 (on grade level). Roughly six in ten seventh graders were below grade level, in line with the middle-grades pattern. 'Developing Learner' (Level 2) is NOT counted here.

Grade 7 math on the Milestones is organized into four strands from Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards — with Probability Reasoning replacing the elementary Measurement & Data Reasoning strand. Proportional reasoning (in Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning) carries the most weight. Exact per-strand weights are in GaDOE's blueprints and not restated here to avoid citing an out-of-date figure.

Make proportional reasoning second nature. Proportions, unit rates, and percent problems (tax, tip, discount, interest) are the spine of grade-7 math and show up throughout the test. Real-world practice makes them stick.
Nail operations with negative numbers. Grade 7 leans hard on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational numbers including negatives. Errors here cascade into equations and everything else — it's worth drilling until it's automatic.
Don't skip probability. Probability Reasoning is a new, self-contained strand at grade 7 — simple and compound events, predictions. It's learnable quickly and a place to pick up points a lot of students leave on the table.
