Grade 5 math on North Carolina's End-of-Grade (EOG) test is fractions-heavy: Number & Operations—Fractions is the largest reporting category at roughly 39-43% of the test. That makes fifth grade the year fractions either become a strength or a lasting gap. The rest of the test spans multi-digit operations and decimals (Number & Operations in Base Ten), plus measurement, data, and geometry.
North Carolina reports results on a 1-to-5 achievement scale, and "on grade level" means Grade Level Proficient (GLP) — Level 3 or above. In 2024-25, 59.0% of NC fifth graders were grade-level proficient in math. So a solid majority were on track, but about four in ten were not.
The EOG math test has two sections every grade: a calculator-INACTIVE section and a calculator-ACTIVE section. At grade 5, students may use a four-function calculator (with a memory key) on the calculator-active section only — so part of the test still rewards by-hand fluency.
The EOG is given online through the NCTest platform. It's essentially untimed (with a daily maximum), and typically takes about two hours in a single school day.
