About the NC EOG Grade 5 Reading Test
Fifth-grade Reading pushes NC students toward middle-school analysis: comparing and integrating information across texts, analyzing how authors support their points, and drawing conclusions from evidence. Grade 5 is not a Read to Achieve grade, but it's a strong stepping stone into grade 6.
The NC EOG assesses reading only (not writing), with four achievement levels (Not Proficient, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5), where "on grade level" is Grade Level Proficient (GLP), Level 3 or above. In 2025-26, 55.1% of NC fifth graders were grade-level proficient in reading. The reporting categories are Reading for Information (the largest), Reading for Literature, and Language/vocabulary.
The test is given online via NCTest.
Grade Level Proficient (GLP) = Level 3+ = on grade level. Level 4+ = College-and-Career Ready. Scores below Level 3 are reported as Not Proficient.
