About the NC EOG Grade 4 Reading Test
Fourth-grade Reading is where North Carolina students post their strongest reading results: 57.4% grade-level proficient in 2025-26, the best reading grade (a small dip from 57.8% in 2024-25). Grade 4 is not a Read to Achieve grade (that's grade 3), so the stakes are lower, but the reading demands step up — explaining text structure, comparing information across a passage, and backing up answers with evidence.
The NC EOG assesses reading only (not writing), with four achievement levels (Not Proficient, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5), where "on grade level" is Grade Level Proficient (GLP), Level 3 or above. The reporting categories are Reading for Information (the largest), Reading for Literature, and Language/vocabulary.
The test is given online via NCTest.
Grade Level Proficient (GLP) = Level 3+ = on grade level — the strongest NC reading grade. Level 4+ = College-and-Career Ready. Scores below Level 3 are reported as Not Proficient.
