Grade 6 is the first middle-grades NC math year, and the content turns abstract: ratios and rates (the biggest reporting category at ~24-28%), the number system (negative numbers, dividing fractions), and the first real algebraic expressions and equations. Middle-grades math also shifts the test structure — from grade 6 on, the calculator-active section is larger.
North Carolina reports on a 1-to-5 scale; "on grade level" is Grade Level Proficient (GLP), Level 3 or above. In 2024-25, 57.0% of NC sixth graders were grade-level proficient in math.
The EOG has a calculator-inactive section (15 items) and a larger calculator-active section (30 items) at grade 6, where a scientific calculator is allowed. It's given online via NCTest.
