Grade 8 is the hardest NC EOG math grade: 48.5% of eighth graders were grade-level proficient in 2024-25 — the only math grade under half. It's also the bridge to high school: Functions is the biggest reporting category (~28-32%), and the content is built around linear relationships, the foundation of Algebra I. Note that some eighth graders take NC Math 1 (an End-of-Course test) instead of the grade-8 EOG; this page covers the grade-8 EOG.
North Carolina reports on a 1-to-5 scale; "on grade level" is Grade Level Proficient (GLP), Level 3 or above.
The EOG has a 15-item calculator-inactive section and a 30-item calculator-active section. Grade 8 is the one grade where a graphing calculator is available on the active section (in addition to a scientific one), online via NCTest.
