About the NC EOG Grade 8 Reading Test
Grade 8 Reading is the final middle-school NC EOG reading test and the honest measure of high-school reading readiness. The reading pushes analysis furthest: evaluating the strength and relevance of an argument, analyzing how authors with differing views use evidence, and integrating information across texts.
The NC EOG assesses reading only (not writing), with four achievement levels (Not Proficient, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5), where "on grade level" is Grade Level Proficient (GLP), Level 3 or above. In 2025-26, 55.9% of NC eighth graders were grade-level proficient in reading. The reporting categories are Reading for Information (the largest), Reading for Literature, and Language/vocabulary.
The test is given online via NCTest.
