Grade 3 is the first year of North Carolina's End-of-Grade (EOG) tests, and it's an encouraging start in math: 63.8% of NC third graders were grade-level proficient in 2024-25 — the strongest math grade. The content is the elementary core: multiplication and division within 100 (the largest category at roughly a third of the test) and the first formal work with fractions.
North Carolina reports on a 1-to-5 scale, and "on grade level" means Grade Level Proficient (GLP) — Level 3 or above. Operations & Algebraic Thinking (multiplication, division, word problems) is the biggest reporting category at grade 3, with Number & Operations—Fractions close behind.
The EOG math test has two sections at every grade: a calculator-inactive section and a calculator-active section (four-function at grade 3). It's given online via NCTest, essentially untimed with a daily maximum.
Grade Level Proficient (GLP) = Level 3+ = on grade level — the strongest NC math grade. Level 4+ = College-and-Career Ready. Levels 1-2 are Not Proficient.
