  1. Question 1 · Grade 3 Math · Standard 3.OA.3

A fruit stand near Brigham City fills 8 bags with peaches. Each bag holds 6 peaches. How many peaches are in the bags?

    1. A.14
    2. B.42
    3. C.48
    4. D.54
    Show the answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 48

    8 bags × 6 peaches = 48 peaches. 14 comes from adding 8 + 6 instead of multiplying.

  2. Question 2 · Grade 4 English · Standard Utah ELA Core: Reading

In a story, Henry forgets his lines in the class play. Everyone is quiet. Then his friend Nora whispers the first word, and Henry finishes the scene. After the play, Henry helps Nora practice her lines for the next show. Why does Henry help Nora at the end?

    1. A.He wants a bigger part in the next play
    2. B.He wants to return the kindness she showed him
    3. C.The teacher made him help
    4. D.Nora forgot her lines in the play
    Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. He wants to return the kindness she showed him

Nora helped Henry when he was stuck. His helping her afterward shows he is grateful and wants to do the same for her. Nothing in the story supports the other choices.

  3. Question 3 · Grade 6 Science · Standard SEEd 6.1

Over about a month, the Moon seems to change shape from a thin crescent to a full Moon and back again. What causes these phases?

    1. A.Earth's shadow covers different parts of the Moon
    2. B.Clouds block part of the Moon
    3. C.We see different amounts of the Moon's sunlit half as it orbits Earth
    4. D.The Moon makes its own light, which gets brighter and dimmer
    Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C. We see different amounts of the Moon's sunlit half as it orbits Earth

The Sun always lights half of the Moon. As the Moon orbits Earth, we see more or less of that lit half, which makes the phases. Earth's shadow only causes a lunar eclipse, not the monthly phases.

  4. Question 4 · Grade 7 Math · Standard 7.RP.3

A pair of ski boots costs $80. They are on sale for 15% off. What is the sale price?

    1. A.$12
    2. B.$65
    3. C.$68
    4. D.$92
    Show the answer and explanation

    Answer: C. $68

    15% of $80 = 0.15 × 80 = $12 off. Sale price: $80 − $12 = $68. $12 is the discount, and $92 adds it instead of subtracting.

  5. Question 5 · Grade 8 English · Standard Utah ELA Core: Reading

In a story, the narrator describes her town's old movie theater: "The velvet seats were worn thin, but every Saturday the line still wrapped around the block." What does this detail suggest?

    1. A.The theater is new and modern
    2. B.Even though the theater is old, people still love going there
    3. C.The theater is closing soon
    4. D.Nobody goes to the movies anymore
    Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. Even though the theater is old, people still love going there

"Worn thin" shows the theater is old, and the long line every Saturday shows it is still popular. The word "but" signals that contrast.

The four RISE proficiency levels

Every RISE summative score report places your child in one of four levels. The descriptions below are the Utah State Board of Education's own, from its family guide to RISE scores.

Level 4
Highly Proficient
Shows an advanced understanding of grade-level standards. Works with grade-level material on their own and uses higher-level thinking skills.
Level 3
Proficient
Shows a solid understanding of grade-level standards. Handles grade-level material and uses some higher-level thinking with little support.
Level 2
Approaching Proficient
Shows a partial understanding and is close to meeting grade-level standards. Shows some higher-level thinking but still needs support.
Level 1
Below Proficient
Does not yet show an understanding of grade-level standards. Partly works with grade-level material and needs a lot of support for higher-level thinking.
  • The report (the Individual Student Report, or ISR) also gives a scale score, adjusted for how hard the questions were.
  • It compares your child's score with the averages for their school, district and the state.
  • Reporting categories break the result into smaller skill areas, which shows what to practice next.
  • The ISR usually arrives within three weeks of your school's testing window. You can ask the school for it, or it may be on the school's parent portal.

What Is the RISE Test in Utah?

RISE (Readiness, Improvement, Success, Empowerment) is Utah's statewide test for grades 3-8, run by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). Students take RISE English language arts (ELA) and math in every grade from 3 to 8, science in grades 4-8, and a writing test in grades 5 and 8. RISE matches the Utah Core Standards. It is computer-adaptive, so questions get harder or easier depending on how your child answers, and it is not timed. USBE says RISE questions are written by Utah teachers and reviewed by Utah parents. Each spring summative test gives a scale score and one of four proficiency levels: Below Proficient, Approaching Proficient, Proficient and Highly Proficient.

When Is the RISE Test in 2026-27?

USBE's 2026-2027 Assessment Director Resource Guide sets the spring RISE summative window for grades 3-8 at March 9 - June 4, 2027. Each district or charter school has 8 weeks inside that statewide window, so your child's school sets the exact days. Optional interim tests in ELA and math run in the fall (August 4 - December 18, 2026) and winter (January 4 - February 26, 2027). Teachers can also give short, optional benchmark modules during the year.

RISE Scoring: Understanding Your Child's Results

Utah uses the following performance levels. Level 3, Proficient, means a solid understanding of grade-level standards, and Level 4, Highly Proficient, means an advanced understanding. USBE describes the levels as a way to see whether your child is meeting grade-level expectations and where they may need extra support or are excelling. Check the reporting categories on the score report to see which skill areas are strong and which need work.

Level 1

Level 4: Highly Proficient

Shows an advanced understanding of grade-level standards. Works with grade-level material on their own and uses higher-level thinking skills.

Level 2

Level 3: Proficient

Shows a solid understanding of grade-level standards. Handles grade-level material and uses some higher-level thinking with little support.

Level 3

Level 2: Approaching Proficient

Shows a partial understanding and is close to meeting grade-level standards. Shows some higher-level thinking but still needs support.

Level 4

Level 1: Below Proficient

Does not yet show an understanding of grade-level standards. Partly works with grade-level material and needs a lot of support for higher-level thinking.

RISE Test Format: What to Expect

Computer-adaptive

RISE adjusts to your child: a correct answer leads to a harder question and a wrong answer to an easier one, until the test finds the right level. USBE tells families that getting harder questions means your child is doing well, and easier questions just mean the test is adjusting.

Untimed

RISE has no time limit. USBE's typical times are 90-135 minutes each for ELA, math and science, and 60-90 minutes for the grade 5 and 8 writing test.

Math: no reference sheet

USBE's math guidance says students must memorize the grade-level formulas named in the standards; other formulas are given inside the question, and no reference sheets are provided. If a question doesn't say how to round, students should give the full decimal or an equivalent fraction.

Math clusters

RISE math includes clusters: multi-part items tied to one real-world task that test several standards at once. Clusters appear in the training tests and benchmark modules, so your child can see them before test day.

Writing in grades 5 and 8

In grades 5 and 8, RISE adds a separate writing test on top of the ELA (reading) test.

Science in grades 4-8

The RISE science test starts in grade 4. USBE's calendar notes there is no summative science test in grade 3.

What's new: 2026 results

On September 11, 2026, USBE reported 2025-26 results. In grades 3-8, 45.3% of students were proficient in RISE ELA, 45.4% in RISE math and 52.3% in RISE science. Grade 3 math (50.1%) and grade 4 math (50.4%) stayed strong, and grade 6 science had the highest proficiency of any grade, 58.2%. Across all tested grades, science (49.8%) is now above its 2019 baseline of 47.0%, while ELA (45.4%) and math (42.5%) are still closing in on 2019 levels.

Utah RISE Score Trends

USBE released the 2025-26 statewide results on September 11, 2026. For RISE in grades 3-8:

RISE subject, grades 3-8% proficient, 2025-26Note
ELA45.3%126,281 of 278,534 tested
Math45.4%126,328 of 278,333 tested
Science (grades 4-8)52.3%122,300 of 233,660 tested
Grade 3 math50.1%
Grade 4 math50.4%
Grade 6 science58.2%Highest of any grade

Across all tested grades, USBE reported ELA at 45.4% (up 1.5 points), math at 42.5% (up 1.2 points) and science at 49.8% (up 2.6 points). USBE called science the first core subject to clearly pass its pre-pandemic level. District and school results are on USBE's Data Gateway dashboards.

What Makes the RISE Different From Other State Tests?

  • -

RISE is untimed: your child can take the time needed on every test.

  • -

Science starts in grade 4 and is tested every year through grade 8.

  • -

Grades 5 and 8 take a separate RISE writing test.

  • -

USBE says RISE questions are written by Utah teachers and reviewed by Utah parents, and math items go through content, bias and sensitivity, and parent reviews plus field testing.

  • -

Optional fall and winter interim tests in ELA and math give a scale score and proficiency level mid-year.

What Utah Parents Should Know About the RISE

1

Ask your school for its testing days. The statewide spring window is March 9 - June 4, 2027, and each district or charter picks 8 weeks inside it.

2

Try the official training tests together at utahrise.org (sign in as Guest, choose Guest Session). They show the tools and question types but give no score.

3

Your child's Individual Student Report (ISR) usually arrives within three weeks of the school's testing window. Ask the teacher for it, or check the school's parent portal.

4

If your child has an IEP, a 504 plan or English learner support, talk to the school about which testing supports and accommodations they can use.

5

Utah parents can exclude their child from state tests with USBE's Parental Exclusion form. It must be returned every year, and the school guarantees the exclusion if it receives the form at least 24 hours before the test.

6

For math, make sure your child knows the grade-level formulas by heart: RISE gives no reference sheet.

Questions parents ask

What is the RISE test?

The RISE is Utah's standardized assessment for grades 3-8. Students are tested in Math and English/RLA every year, and Science in grades 4-8.

How does iMasterly match the real RISE?

Practice tests are built to the RISE's published blueprint for each grade and subject: the same reporting categories, question types and point values, with questions written to Utah Core Standards. Before a question goes into the bank it is checked independently: a separate check solves it from scratch without seeing the answer key, and on math questions code checks the arithmetic. Questions that fail are reworked and checked again; any that still fail are held back and never shown to your child.

What does it cost?

RISE practice is not sold separately: it comes with the AI tutoring and personalized curriculum. Current plans are on the pricing page.

How many practice questions are available?

iMasterly has a deep bank of standards-aligned practice questions for every grade and subject, so your child can keep practicing without running out.
