Missouri MAP sample questions with answers

One question from each of several grades, with the answer and a step-by-step explanation. Open a question's answer when your child has tried it.

  1. Question 1 · Grade 3 Math · Standard 3.RA.D.9

Ava has 3 packs of stickers. Each pack has 8 stickers. She gives 5 stickers to her friend. How many stickers does Ava have now?

    1. A.11
    2. B.16
    3. C.19
    4. D.29
    Show the answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 19

First multiply: 3 × 8 = 24 stickers. Then subtract the ones she gave away: 24 − 5 = 19. 29 comes from adding the 5 instead of subtracting it.

  2. Question 2 · Grade 4 English · Standard 4.R.1.B.d

Read the sentence from a story. "On the first day of camp, Jada told a silly joke to break the ice." What does the idiom "break the ice" mean?

    1. A.To crack frozen water
    2. B.To help people feel relaxed and start talking
    3. C.To make someone angry
    4. D.To end a game early
    Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. To help people feel relaxed and start talking

An idiom means something different from its exact words. On the first day of camp, a joke helps strangers feel comfortable, so "break the ice" means to ease the awkwardness.

  3. Question 3 · Grade 6 Math · Standard 6.RP.A.3.c

A class has 75 students, and 40% of them ride the bus. How many students ride the bus?

    1. A.30
    2. B.35
    3. C.45
    4. D.115
    Show the answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 30

    40% = 0.40. 0.40 × 75 = 30 students. 45 is the number who do NOT ride the bus.

  4. Question 4 · Grade 7 Math · Standard 7.RP.A.3

A $60 board game is on sale for 20% off. What is the sale price?

    1. A.$12
    2. B.$40
    3. C.$48
    4. D.$72
    Show the answer and explanation

    Answer: C. $48

    20% of $60 = 0.20 × 60 = $12 off. Sale price = 60 − 12 = $48. $72 adds the discount instead of subtracting it.

  5. Question 5 · Grade 8 English · Standard 8.RL.2.D

Read the line from a poem. "The old porch swing groaned and complained each time we sat down." Which literary device does the poet use?

    1. A.Alliteration
    2. B.Personification
    3. C.Hyperbole
    4. D.Onomatopoeia
    Show the answer and explanation

    Answer: B. Personification

Personification gives human actions or feelings to something that isn't human. A swing can't really complain; the poet gives it a human quality to show how old and creaky it is.

Missouri MAP is not NWEA MAP Growth

The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) Grade-Level Assessment is the state test that DESE gives every spring and uses for school accountability. It is built on the Missouri Learning Standards and scored in four levels from Below Basic to Advanced. NWEA's MAP Growth is a different test with a similar name. If your school gives MAP Growth, see our MAP Growth practice test instead.

What Is the Missouri MAP Test in Missouri?

The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) Grade-Level Assessments are Missouri's yearly state tests for grades 3-8, given by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) with its testing vendor, Data Recognition Corporation (DRC). English Language Arts and Mathematics are tested in every grade from 3 to 8, and Science in grades 5 and 8. MAP was first developed in response to Missouri's Outstanding Schools Act of 1993, and today it measures progress toward the Missouri Learning Standards. Students test online in DRC INSIGHT, with large print, braille and paper forms available as accommodations. Results come in four performance levels: Below Basic, Basic, Proficient and Advanced. A student at Proficient or Advanced has met the standard. Note: this is not the NWEA MAP Growth test, which has a similar name.

When Is the Missouri MAP Test in 2026-2027?

DESE's 2026-2027 Grade-Level Test Coordinator's Manual sets the statewide MAP Grade-Level testing window for April 5 - May 14, 2027. Each district sets its own window inside those dates, and students who can't finish by the end of the district window must finish by the end of the state window. Before the spring test, DESE makes Missouri Instructional Testlets available (from September 8, 2026) and posts grade-level practice forms (from November 2, 2026). Districts can order printed Individual Student Reports from April 5 to June 11, 2027, and those printed reports arrive at districts on August 4, 2027.

Missouri MAP Scoring: Understanding Your Child's Results

Missouri uses the following performance levels. Proficient and Advanced both mean your child met the standard; Below Basic and Basic mean more learning is needed. MAP scale scores run across grades: 160-650 in ELA and 185-660 in math, 100-540 in grade 5 science and 285-710 in grade 8 science. The score where Proficient starts is different for every grade and subject (for example, 362 in grade 3 math and 468 in grade 8 math), so use the table below for your child's grade. Reporting categories don't get their own level; instead, each category score is compared with the score that separates Basic from Proficient.

Below Basic

Minimal command of the knowledge and skills in the grade-level expectations of the Missouri Learning Standards. DESE says these students need substantial academic support to be prepared for the next grade and to be on track for college and career readiness.

Basic

Partial or uneven command of the grade-level expectations. These students need additional academic support to ensure success in the next grade and to be on track for college and career readiness.

Proficient

Adequate, but not necessarily always complete, understanding of the grade-level expectations. These students need little to no additional support, are prepared for the next grade, and are on track for college and career readiness. Proficient means your child met the standard.

Advanced

Thorough understanding of the grade-level expectations. These students are well prepared for the next grade and for college and career readiness.

Missouri MAP Test Format: What to Expect

ELA: Reading, Research, Writing, Listening

The ELA test reports four categories: Reading, Research, Writing and Listening. It has three sessions in grades 3, 5, 6 and 7, and four sessions in grades 4 and 8, where the first session includes a passage-based writing prompt. The writing prompt is scored by trained human readers on a 10-point rubric for organization and purpose, evidence and elaboration, and conventions. DESE's 2026 blueprints total 56 points in grades 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8, and 52 points in grade 7.

Math: Three Sessions with a Performance Event

The math test has three sessions. Sessions 1 and 2 have selected-response and technology-enhanced items, and session 3 is a performance event: a real-world problem with hand-scored constructed-response parts. DESE's blueprints total 48 points in grades 3-5 (the performance event is 6 points) and 54 points in grades 6-8 (the performance event is 8 points). The performance event can line up with any reporting category.

Math Reporting Categories

Grades 3-5: Number Sense and Operations in Base Ten; Number Sense and Operations in Fractions; Relationships and Algebraic Thinking; Geometry and Measurement & Data and Statistics. Grades 6-7: Ratios and Proportional Relationships; Number Sense and Operations; Expressions, Equations and Inequalities; Geometry and Measurement & Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability. Grade 8 combines Number Sense with Expressions, Equations and Inequalities, plus Geometry and Measurement & Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability, and Functions.

Science in Grades 5 and 8

The science test has two sessions, each with multiple-choice, technology-enhanced and constructed-response items. Constructed responses are scored by trained human readers. It reports Physical Science, Life Science, and Earth and Space Sciences, and DESE's 2026 blueprints total 60 points in each grade.

Question Types

DESE's blueprints list selected response (multiple choice), evidence-based selected response, constructed response, writing tasks, performance events, and technology-enhanced items such as drag and drop, drop-down menus, matching, select-answer and hot spot. Short-text items ask students to type an answer.

Calculators

Calculators are not allowed on grade 3-5 math without an IEP or 504 accommodation (grades 4-5 can use a physical four-function calculator only as an accommodation; in grade 3 it invalidates the score). Grades 6-8 get Missouri's embedded Desmos four-function, scientific and graphing calculators on math. Grade 5 science has a Desmos four-function calculator, and grade 8 science has the Desmos calculators too.

What's new on Missouri MAP for 2026-27

DESE presented the preliminary 2025-26 MAP results to the State Board of Education on August 18, 2026. Participation was 99%, and DESE reported an overall increase in proficiency across ELA, math, science and social studies. ELA improved over the prior year in every grade except grades 5 and 6, and math improved on the grade-level tests. Highlights included grade 6 math at 48.9% (up three points) and grade 8 science at 43.9% (up more than four points). For 2026-27, the spring window is April 5 - May 14, 2027, and practice form reports are now available to schools in DRC's reporting system.

Missouri MAP Proficient Score Ranges by Grade

This is where Proficient starts and ends on each test, from DESE's Spring 2026 Parent Guide to Interpreting Results. Any score above the Proficient range is Advanced.

GradeProficient range (ELA / Math)Note
Grade 3364-394 / 362-389
Grade 4388-418 / 387-412

Grade 7435-455 / 435-461
Grade 8443-475 / 468-505Science 510-536

Each Individual Student Report shows the scale score, the performance level, a band for the range the score would likely fall in on a retest, and a score for each reporting category compared with the Basic/Proficient cut.

What Makes the Missouri MAP Different From Other State Tests?

  • -

ELA includes listening and research: Listening and Research are reported alongside Reading and Writing in every grade 3-8.

  • -

Grades 4 and 8 add a human-scored writing prompt on a 10-point rubric, which makes those ELA tests the longest (about 2¾ to 5 hours in spring 2026).

  • -

Every math test ends with a performance event: a multi-part, real-world problem that is partly hand-scored.

  • -

Score reports include a Lexile measure for ELA and a Quantile measure for math, which you can use to pick books and math work at the right level.

  • -

Scale scores and the Proficient cut differ by grade and subject, so a 400 means something different in grade 4 ELA than in grade 7 math.

What Missouri Parents Should Know About the Missouri MAP

1

Check the test name on your child's report. Missouri MAP is the state test scored Below Basic to Advanced. NWEA MAP Growth is a different test with a similar name.

2

Find your child's grade in the table below. If the scale score is just under the Proficient line, a focused push on the weakest reporting category can make the difference.

3

Plan for long ELA days in grades 4 and 8. In spring 2026 those tests took about 2¾ to 5 hours across sessions, compared with about 1¼ to 3¼ hours in grades 3, 5, 6 and 7.

4

Try DESE's practice forms. They are posted on the Grade-Level page as printable PDFs with scoring guides, and DESE says the practice form mirrors the real test.

5

In grades 3-5, a read-aloud accommodation for the ELA reading passages changes what the test measures, so the student receives the Lowest Obtainable Scale Score. Ask the school how any accommodation will affect your child's score.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Missouri MAP

Is the Missouri MAP test the same as NWEA MAP Growth?

No. Missouri MAP is the Missouri Assessment Program, the state test DESE gives every spring in grades 3-8 and reports in four levels from Below Basic to Advanced. NWEA MAP Growth is a different test with a similar name. Check which one your child's report shows.

When is the Missouri MAP test in 2027?

DESE's 2026-2027 Test Coordinator's Manual sets the statewide window for April 5 - May 14, 2027. Each district picks its own testing dates inside that window.

What grades and subjects are tested?

English Language Arts and Mathematics in every grade from 3 to 8, and Science in grades 5 and 8. The grade 4 and grade 8 ELA tests also include a writing prompt.

What is a good score on the Missouri MAP?

Proficient or Advanced means your child met the standard. Where Proficient starts depends on the grade and subject: for example, 364 in grade 3 ELA, 362 in grade 3 math, 443 in grade 8 ELA and 468 in grade 8 math.

How long is the Missouri MAP test?

In spring 2026, DESE reported that ELA took about 1¼ to 3¼ hours in grades 3, 5, 6 and 7 and about 2¾ to 5 hours in grades 4 and 8. Math took about 1¼ to 2½ hours, and science in grades 5 and 8 took about 1¾ to 2¾ hours. The times are spread across several sessions, and DESE's timing guidelines are estimates.

Is there an official Missouri MAP practice test?

Yes. DESE posts grade-level practice forms for ELA and math in grades 3-8 and science in grades 5 and 8, with scoring guides, on its Grade-Level Assessment page. The 2026-27 practice forms became available November 2, 2026. DRC's Online Tools Training also shows the item types. Our practice papers add full-length practice built to DESE's blueprints, with every answer explained.

Does the Missouri MAP decide if my third grader is held back?

Missouri's reading law (RSMo 167.645) works through state-approved K-3 reading assessments and reading success plans, not the MAP. For a third grader with a substantial reading deficiency, the decision to promote or retain is made only after the school consults directly with the parent and makes a specific plan to fix the reading problem.

When do Missouri MAP scores come out?

DESE presents preliminary statewide results to the State Board of Education in August (August 18, 2026 for the 2026 tests). For the 2027 tests, printed Individual Student Reports ordered by districts arrive at districts on August 4, 2027. Ask your school how and when it shares your child's report.

Questions parents ask

What is the Missouri MAP test?

The Missouri MAP is Missouri's standardized assessment for grades 3-8. Students are tested in Math and English/RLA every year, and Science in grades 5 and 8.

How does iMasterly match the real Missouri MAP?

Practice tests are built to the Missouri MAP's published blueprint for each grade and subject: the same reporting categories, question types and point values, with questions written to Missouri Learning Standards. Before a question goes into the bank it is checked independently: a separate check solves it from scratch without seeing the answer key, and on math questions code checks the arithmetic. Questions that fail are reworked and checked again; any that still fail are held back and never shown to your child.

What does it cost?

Missouri MAP practice is not sold separately: it comes with the AI tutoring and personalized curriculum. Current plans are on the pricing page.
