MAP Growth Practice Test

An adaptive practice test in the style of NWEA's MAP Growth, in math, reading and language usage. Every answer decides the next question, and every missed question is explained at the end.

Unofficial practice. MAP® Growth™ and RIT are trademarks of NWEA, which is not affiliated with iMasterly and has not reviewed or endorsed this test.

Math questions like MAP Growth's, with the goal areas mixed through the test and, for kindergarten and grade 1, every question read aloud. Each answer decides how hard the next question is, so it is fine to find some questions hard. Take your time: there is no timer.

Quick answer

What is on the MAP Growth test?

MAP Growth is an untimed, adaptive test from NWEA with 40 to 43 questions per subject in math, reading, language usage or science. Each answer changes the next question, so most children get about half right. It gives a RIT score on one scale across all grades, and schools usually test in the fall, winter and spring.

How MAP Growth works

Questions40 to 43 per subjectThe exact number varies a little because the test adapts. The K-2 version has 43.
TimeUntimedNWEA says most tests take 40 to 55 minutes; the youngest children are often done in about 25.
How it adaptsRight answer, harder questionA wrong answer brings an easier one, so most children get about half right. That is by design.
SubjectsMath, reading, language usage, scienceMath and reading are also offered in Spanish. Language usage covers grammar, usage and writing.
How oftenUp to four times a yearMost schools test in the fall, winter and spring to measure growth.

What our practice test does

Adapts like MAP

Math, reading and language usage, with the K-2, 2-5 and 6+ layouts and the instructional areas mixed through the test.

Explains every miss

At the end, each missed question is shown with the right answer and why.

Shows what to work on

The report gives the grade level your child is working at in each area, with a lesson for each skill to work on.

It does not give a RIT score: that comes from NWEA's own scale, which we do not imitate.

Questions parents ask

What is the MAP Growth test?
MAP Growth is a computer-adaptive test from NWEA in math, reading, language usage and science. Each answer decides the next question, so every child gets a different test that finds the level they are working at. Schools usually give it in the fall, winter and spring to measure growth over the year.
How many questions are on the MAP test?
NWEA lists 40 to 43 questions per subject for grades 2 and up, and 43 for the K-2 version. The exact number varies slightly because the test adapts to each child.
Is the MAP test timed?
No. Children can take as long as they need. NWEA found that most MAP Growth tests are finished in 40 to 55 minutes, and the youngest children often in about 25 minutes.
Why did my child get so many questions wrong?
That is how the test works. NWEA says most students answer about half of the questions correctly, because the test keeps adjusting until it finds questions at the edge of what a child knows. A child getting half wrong is normal and does not mean a low score.
What is a good MAP score?
It depends on grade and season. A RIT score near the national average for your child's grade is typical, and percentiles show how far above or below. Our MAP test scores page has NWEA's 2025 averages for every grade and a percentile calculator.
Is MAP the same as the state test?
No. NWEA says MAP Growth is aligned to the same state standards as the state test, but it measures where a child is and how much they grow during the year, not whether they met one grade-level bar at the end of it.
Is there a MAP test for kindergarten?
Yes. MAP Growth K-2 covers reading and math for young learners. Children wear headphones because many questions are read aloud. Our practice test reads questions aloud for kindergarten and grade 1 too.
Does this practice test give a RIT score?
No. RIT scores come from NWEA's own scale, which we do not have and do not imitate. Our report shows the grade level your child is working at in each area and every missed question with its answer explained, which is the part that says what to practise.
Can a child prepare for MAP Growth?
Practising on the same kinds of questions helps a child get used to the format and to the idea that some questions will feel hard. The most useful part is the review afterwards: the skills a child missed are the ones to work on.
