How our papers relate to Kangaroo
These are not past Math Kangaroo papers. They are our own, written by hand on the SOF olympiad blueprint: 35 questions in an hour for grades 3 and 4, 50 for grades 5 to 8. That is longer than the Kangaroo paper itself (24 or 30 questions in 75 minutes), so use the official past papers for the exact format.
What carries across is the thinking. Math Kangaroo describes its questions as word problems chosen to challenge problem-solving skills, and ours reward noticing something rather than calculating faster. Every question here also names the mistake behind each wrong option.

Questions parents ask
What is Math Kangaroo?
Math Kangaroo is an international maths competition run in more than 100 countries under the Kangourou sans Frontières association; Math Kangaroo USA runs it here for grades 1 to 12 (kindergarten children can sit the grade 1 test). It is held on the third Thursday of March, which in 2027 is Thursday, March 18. The test is 75 minutes of multiple choice, with no calculators: 24 questions for grades 1 to 4 and 30 for grade 5 and up.
What are the Math Kangaroo levels?
Math Kangaroo USA groups grades in pairs for its papers and practice materials: grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. Results, though, are ranked by single grade, so a third grader on the grades 3-4 paper is compared only with other third graders. Internationally the age bands carry names such as Ecolier (about ages 9 to 10), Benjamin (about 11 to 12) and Cadet (about 13 to 14), and each country groups its levels its own way.
How should a child practise for Math Kangaroo?
Sitting a full paper under time beats working through loose problems, because Kangaroo is as much about deciding which questions to attempt as it is about solving them. Practise the whole paper, then look at what each wrong answer meant: a wrong choice usually comes from one specific mistake, and knowing which mistake you made is worth more than knowing the right answer.
Is Math Kangaroo harder than AMC 8?
They are different competitions. AMC 8 is aimed at middle school and focuses on classical topics such as geometry, number theory and counting. Math Kangaroo starts at grade 1 and has no penalty for wrong answers, though its 5-point questions at each level are genuinely difficult. Many students do Kangaroo first and move to AMC 8 later.
What score is good on Math Kangaroo?
Math Kangaroo has no pass mark. The top score is 96 for grades 1 to 4 and 120 for grade 5 and up, with a third of the questions worth 3, 4 and 5 points each. It publishes national and state rankings and percentiles at each grade. A useful practice target is finishing the paper with time to check.
