Grade 8 is the last middle-grades LEAP math test and the mathematical bridge to high school: the content is built around functions and linear relationships, the foundation of Algebra I. The scoring frame is the same as every LEAP grade — "Mastery" is the on-grade-level target, "Basic" is below it — and statewide only about a third of Louisiana students in grades 3-8 reach Mastery in math.
The test measures the Louisiana Student Standards, organized into Major Content and Additional & Supporting Content with reasoning tasks. The signature grade-8 skills are understanding functions, graphing and interpreting linear relationships (slope and intercept), the Pythagorean theorem, and exponents and scientific notation.
Statewide in 2025, 33% of Louisiana students (grades 3-8) reached Mastery or above in math.
LEAP is given online. Grade 8 is the one grade where a scientific calculator (no graphing, no CAS) is allowed on Sessions 2 and 3; Session 1 is calculator-free. A math reference sheet is provided.
Mastery + Advanced = on grade level. 'Basic' is BELOW Mastery. LDOE reports by subject across grades 3-8.
