Sixth grade is the first middle-grades LEAP math year, and the content jumps in abstraction: ratios and rates, dividing fractions, negative numbers, and the first real algebraic expressions and equations. The scoring frame is unchanged — "Mastery" is the on-grade-level target, "Basic" is below it — and statewide only about a third of Louisiana students in grades 3-8 reach Mastery in math.
The test measures the Louisiana Student Standards, organized into Major Content and Additional & Supporting Content with multi-step reasoning tasks. Ratios and rates are the signature new grade-6 skill, and early algebra becomes central.
Statewide in 2025, 33% of Louisiana students (grades 3-8) reached Mastery or above in math; LDOE reports by subject across the band.
