About the LEAP 2025 Grade 4 English Test

Fourth-grade English is where LEAP reading gets more analytical. Grade 4 is not a retention grade (the grade-3 rule uses the DIBELS screener), so the stakes are lower, but the reading demands step up: explaining text structure, comparing information across a passage, and backing up answers with evidence.

The scoring frame holds — "Mastery" is the on-grade-level target, "Basic" is below it — and statewide about 43% of Louisiana students in grades 3-8 reach Mastery in ELA. As at every grade, LEAP ELA pairs reading with a real writing task (Literary Analysis, Research Simulation, or Narrative).

Statewide in 2025, 43% of Louisiana students (grades 3-8) reached Mastery or above in ELA. LEAP is given online (paper at grade 3 only).

43%% at Mastery or above — ELA, statewide grades 3-8 (2025)

Mastery + Advanced = on grade level. 'Basic' is BELOW Mastery. LDOE reports by subject across grades 3-8.
