About the LEAP 2025 Grade 3 English Test

Grade 3 English is the first LEAP ELA test, and the most important thing to clear up is the retention question: Louisiana's third-grade retention is driven by the DIBELS 8th literacy screener (Act 422) — a separate reading measure — NOT by the LEAP ELA test. A strong LEAP score can serve as one exemption, but a low LEAP ELA score does not by itself hold a third grader back.

On scoring, "Mastery" is the on-grade-level target and "Basic" is below it. Statewide, about 43% of Louisiana students in grades 3-8 reach Mastery or above in ELA — higher than math (33%), but still under half.

LEAP ELA is not a multiple-choice reading test — it pairs reading passages with real writing. Across the grade band, students complete writing tasks like a Literary Analysis, a Research Simulation, or a Narrative, so reading and writing are assessed together. At grade 3 the focus is understanding stories and informational texts, main idea and details, and vocabulary in context.

Statewide in 2025, 43% of Louisiana students (grades 3-8) reached Mastery or above in ELA; LDOE reports this by subject across the band. LEAP is given online, with a paper option at grade 3.

43%% at Mastery or above — ELA, statewide grades 3-8 (2025)

Mastery + Advanced = on grade level. 'Basic' is BELOW Mastery. Higher than math (33%) but still under half. LDOE reports by subject across grades 3-8.

What Louisiana Parents Should Know About Grade 3 English

1

Know the retention rule: it runs off the DIBELS reading screener, not LEAP. Focus reading practice on the DIBELS-style skills for promotion, and treat LEAP as a broader reading-and-writing check.

2

Practice reading AND writing together — LEAP pairs passages with a writing task, so short written responses to what your child reads build the tested skill.

3

Aim for Mastery; 'Basic' is below grade level.

4

Build vocabulary through context — the test asks students to figure out word meaning from how words are used in a passage.

LEAP 2025 Grade 3 English — Frequently Asked Questions

Can a low grade-3 LEAP reading score hold my child back?
