Best AI tutors for kids:
how to choose

We make iMasterly, so we are not neutral. This guide gives you the checklist we would use ourselves and puts three tutors side by side, using only what each company says on its own website.

Quick answer

What is the best AI tutor for kids?

The best one is the one that fits your child: Khanmigo for school-age kids who want homework help on Khan Academy's content, Synthesis Tutor for math ages 5 to 11, and iMasterly for a 1-on-1 tutor across every K-8 subject with state-test practice. Whatever you pick, make sure it teaches instead of giving answers and that you control the account.

The checklist

Ask these about any AI tutor before your child uses it.

1. Does it teach, or answer?

Ask it for the answer to a homework problem. A tutor should ask your child to try a step, not hand over the result.

2. Is it built for children?

General chatbots are made for adults. Look for a tutor made for your child's age, with content limits.

3. Who controls the account?

For children under 13, a parent should create it, and US law requires verifiable parental consent.

4. Can you see what happened?

Chat history, progress or a regular summary: you should be able to see what your child did and learned.

5. Does it fit your child's age and subjects?

A math-only tutor won't help with reading or homework in other subjects; a text-only tutor is hard for early readers.

6. What happens with your child's data?

Read the privacy policy: no advertising to children, and a way for you to delete your child's information.

Questions parents ask

What is the best AI tutor for kids?
It depends on what your child needs. Khanmigo suits school-age children who already use Khan Academy and want homework help on its content. Synthesis Tutor is built for math for children about 5 to 11. iMasterly is a 1-on-1 tutor for every K-8 subject, with homework help and practice built to state tests. Use the checklist on this page to match one to your child.
Is an AI tutor better than ChatGPT for kids?
For learning, usually yes. General chatbots are built for adults and will often just give the answer. AI tutors for children are built to teach step by step, keep to school subjects, and give parents a way to see what their child did.
How much do AI tutors for kids cost?
On the companies' own pages, checked October 23, 2026: Khanmigo for families is $4 a month or $44 a year plus sales tax, for up to 10 children; Synthesis says its tutor costs less than $1 a day and offers a free trial. For iMasterly, see our pricing page.
What age should a child start with an AI tutor?
Children who cannot yet read well need a tutor that talks and listens rather than one that relies on typing. For any age, the parent should create the account, and for children under 13 US law requires verifiable parental consent.
Will an AI tutor do my child's homework for them?
A good one will not. Khanmigo says it never gives the answer; iMasterly's Ms. Emma asks your child to try each step and explains why a wrong answer is wrong. Test this yourself: ask the tutor for the answer and see what it does.
