About the LEAP 2025 Grade 5 Science Test
Science has the lowest Mastery rate of Louisiana's four LEAP subjects: statewide, 31% of students in grades 3-8 reached Mastery or above in 2026 — below ELA (43%), social studies (33%), and math (34%). In 2026-27 every grade 3-8 takes a grade-specific LEAP science test; BESE has approved moving to grade-band science tests starting in 2028-29. The scoring frame is the same — "Mastery" is the on-grade-level target, "Basic" is below it.
The test measures the Louisiana Student Standards for Science, which are three-dimensional and phenomenon-based: students apply science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts to real phenomena, organized into Physical, Life, and Earth & Space Science. LEAP science uses item sets and a task set built around a scientific phenomenon, plus stand-alone items, so reading and reasoning about science matter as much as recall.

What's On The LEAP 2025 Grade 5 Science Test
Grade 5 science on LEAP is three-dimensional and phenomenon-based, covering Physical, Life, and Earth & Space Science. LDOE reports it in three practice-based categories: Investigate, Evaluate, and Reason Scientifically (the extended-response task counts toward the overall score only).
