NYC Gifted & Talented for fall 2027,
with no test

New York City no longer uses a test for G&T. Kindergarten applicants are judged by their pre-K teacher or a DOE interview, and grades 1 to 4 qualify on report card grades. Here is exactly how, and every date for fall 2027.

Quick answer

Is there a test for NYC Gifted and Talented?

No. For kindergarten in fall 2027, families list G&T programs on the kindergarten application (December 9, 2026 to January 22, 2027); pre-K teachers evaluate current public, charter and pre-K center students, and other children have an interview. For grades 1-4, a child is eligible with 3s or 4s in math, reading and writing on the latest report card and no 1s this year. Offers depend on choices, seats and priorities.

Kindergarten: nomination or interview

There is no separate G&T application. You add G&T programs to your child’s regular kindergarten application, and eligibility is decided after you apply.

If your child is in pre-K at a district school, a Pre-K Center, a community organization (CBO) or a charter school, their pre-K teachers evaluate them. If your child is in a private or parochial pre-K, or not in school, the Division of Early Childhood Education contacts you after the application closes to set up an interview, and early childhood experts nominate eligible children.

What teachers look for in a four-year-old

The nomination form has three parts, and each looks at behavior a teacher has seen more than once:

  • Curiosity: questioning, observing, exploring, creating and problem-solving, in words or without them.
  • Approaches to learning: initiative, persistence, creativity and imagination, and self-reflection.
  • Social perception and self-direction: working with other children, and exploring and solving problems independently.

Grades 1 to 4: report card grades

Current kindergarten to grade 3 students in NYC public schools are eligible if their most recent report card shows a 3 or 4 (or the equivalent) in math, reading and writing, and they had no 1 in any marking period this year in math, reading, writing, social studies or science.

Charter and private school families email the report card grades to ESEnrollment@schools.nyc.gov with the subject "Grades 1-4 G&T Eligibility" and hear back within two business days. NYC converts other grading scales: 90-100 or an A counts as a 4, 80-89 or a B as a 3. Homeschool families email in the spring with the second or third quarterly report.

Children already in a district G&T program can apply only to citywide programs. Children in a citywide program do not reapply to stay.

What to do as a parent

  1. Kindergarten: list the G&T programs you want on the kindergarten application between December 9, 2026 and January 22, 2027. Rank them honestly.
  2. If your child is not in a public, charter or pre-K center program, expect a call for an interview after January 22.
  3. Grades 1-4: check the latest report card for 3s and 4s in math, reading and writing, then apply April 19 to May 7, 2027.
  4. Remember that eligibility is not a seat. Apply to the programs you would really accept.

Questions parents ask

Does NYC still use a G&T test?
No. Kindergarten eligibility comes from a pre-K teacher evaluation or a DOE interview, and grades 1-4 eligibility comes from report card grades.
Can I prepare my four-year-old for the G&T interview?
NYC describes what it looks for: curiosity, persistence, creativity, independence and how a child works with others. Those come from everyday play, reading together and conversation, not test prep.
My child got all 4s. Do they get priority?
No. Once a child is eligible, NYC does not rank eligible applicants by their grades. Offers depend on your choices, seats and priorities such as siblings.
We are in a private school. How do we apply for grades 1-4?
Email your child’s report card grades to ESEnrollment@schools.nyc.gov with the subject "Grades 1-4 G&T Eligibility", the child’s name, date of birth and a short note. NYC replies within two business days and explains how to apply if your child is eligible.
Is an eligible child guaranteed a seat?
No. Seats are limited, so some eligible children do not get an offer and may be placed on waitlists.
