About the Georgia Milestones Grade 3 English Test
Grade 3 English is the highest-stakes reading year in Georgia elementary school. It's the grade where Georgia's promotion rule (O.C.G.A. § 20-2-283 and State Board Rule 160-4-2-.11) covers the End-of-Grade READING score: a third grader who doesn't achieve grade level gets extra instruction and a retest, and a student still below grade level is retained unless a placement committee unanimously decides to promote.
Since 2025-26, the test follows Georgia's new K-12 English Language Arts Standards. GaDOE's August 2025 blueprint splits the 60 points into two domains: Interpreting Texts (reading, listening and viewing — about 34 points) and Constructing Texts (writing, speaking and creating — about 26 points). The claims cover context, structure and style, techniques, research and analysis, grammar conventions and vocabulary. The grade 3 test includes an 8-point Extended Writing Task — students read and write in response to text — and GaDOE gives students a Writer's Checklist during testing. Your child's Lexile measure and Reading Status come from the Interpreting Texts questions.

Prioritize grade-3 reading above everything else this year — it's the score covered by the promotion rule. Daily reading with your child, and talking about what the text says and means, is the highest-leverage thing you can do.

Ask 'what is this mostly about, and how do you know?' after reading. Interpreting Texts — about 34 of the 60 points — rewards using details from the passage, and it's also where your child's Lexile measure and Reading Status come from.

Don't forget the writing task. Grade 3 includes an 8-point Extended Writing Task, so your child needs to read and write a full response — not just answer multiple choice. GaDOE's Writer's Checklist (given during the test) is a good guide for practice.

Build vocabulary through context, not flashcards. Reading widely and pausing on unfamiliar words to guess-then-check builds exactly the skill the test rewards.
Georgia Milestones Grade 3 English — Frequently Asked Questions
Does the grade 3 Georgia Milestones reading test count toward promotion?
Yes. Under Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 20-2-283) and State Board Rule 160-4-2-.11, a third grader who does not achieve grade level on the End-of-Grade reading assessment gets accelerated, differentiated or additional instruction and a retest. If the student is still below grade level after the retest, the rule says the school retains the student — but the parent or teacher can appeal to a placement committee (the principal or designee, the parent and the teacher), which can promote the student by unanimous decision with a plan for the next year.
What is on the 3rd grade Georgia Milestones ELA test?
Under GaDOE's August 2025 blueprint for the new ELA test: two domains, Interpreting Texts (about 34 of 60 points — reading and analyzing literary and informational texts, vocabulary) and Constructing Texts (about 26 points — writing, grammar and conventions, and an 8-point Extended Writing Task). Why won't I get my child's 2026 ELA Milestones score right away?
2025-26 was the first year of ELA tests aligned to Georgia's new K-12 English Language Arts Standards. GaDOE says additional test development, including standard setting and State Board adoption of new achievement standards, must be finished before ELA scores can be calculated, and its timeline shows student reporting beginning in November 2026. Math, science and social studies results were released in August 2026.
