Figure classification questions: work out the rule, then apply it

How the puzzle is built

  • 1Three example figures share at least one property. Sometimes they share several, and the shared set is the rule.
  • 2Anything that differs between the three examples is deliberately not part of the rule. Position and tilt are the usual decoys.
  • 3The options each match some of the rule. Only one matches all of it.
  • 4Wrong options typically break one property while matching the rest, which is why they look so reasonable.

The method, in order

Worth saying out loud the first few times. The order matters more than the speed.

  1. 1. Name what the three examples share, out loud

    Count, shape, colour, shading. Saying it converts a vague impression into a testable rule.

  2. 2. Name what differs between them

    Whatever differs is not the rule. Usually this is position or rotation, and ruling it out prevents a whole class of wrong answers.

  3. 3. Predict the answer from the rule alone

    Describe what must be true: "three of them, dotted, six-sided." Do this before reading the options.

  4. 4. Reject options one property at a time

    Take your list and knock out any option that fails on any single item. Do not weigh options against each other.

The four ways children go wrong

These are not guesses. They are what the wrong options in a real question are built from, which is why each one feels reasonable at the time.

Treating tilt or position as part of the rule

The fix: If the three examples are tilted differently, tilt is deliberately irrelevant. What differs between examples can never be the rule.

Matching on one property and stopping

The fix: The rule is usually two or three properties together. Write them all down before choosing.

Confusing colour with shading

The fix: Green and blue is a colour rule. Solid, striped and dotted is a shading rule. They are separate and both appear.

Counting shapes carelessly

The fix: Count each option deliberately. Count is the property most often used to separate two otherwise identical options.

What is a figure classification question?

Three figures are shown that belong to the same group, and you choose a fourth that belongs with them. Unlike an odd one out, nothing is being excluded: you are identifying a rule from examples and then applying it.

How is this different from odd one out?

Odd one out gives you a set and asks which member does not fit. Classification gives you a set that all fit and asks you to extend it. The reasoning is the same in both directions, but classification requires you to state the rule positively before you can answer.

Which tests use figure classification?

The CogAT nonverbal battery, the OLSAT figural reasoning cluster, CAT4 nonverbal reasoning, and SOF olympiad logical reasoning sections, where it often appears as a grouping question.

My child says "they all look the same". What now?

Ask what is different between the three examples first, not what is the same. Differences are easier to see, and everything that differs can be crossed off the list of possible rules. What remains is usually the rule.

How many properties does the rule usually involve?

Typically two or three: for example three shapes, all dotted, all six-sided. The options are built so that each one satisfies most of the rule and fails on exactly one property, which is why a partial answer feels so convincing.

Is there a reliable order to check properties in?

Count, then shape, then shading, then colour, works well because count and shape are the least ambiguous. Whatever the order, the point is to use the same one every time so nothing gets skipped under pressure.
